How we write and review our guides

Our guides are written and reviewed by AIV Insurance, a licensed Texas insurance agency (Texas agency license #3556062). They explain how coverage generally works for people who own a home, a rental house or a short-term rental in Texas.

Where the facts come from

We start from primary sources: the Texas Department of Insurance, Texas statutes and rules, the Texas standard policy forms published by the Texas Department of Insurance, federal agencies, and city pages for local rules. Each guide lists every source it relies on at the end, and the linked source is the authority when it and the guide differ.

How a guide is dated and kept current

Each guide shows the date its words last changed, next to “Updated”. When a rule a guide relies on changes, we re-check that guide, and its date moves with its words.

What the guides leave out

We don't name insurance companies in the guides, in keeping with Texas rules on insurance advertising. We don't state prices either: what a policy costs depends on the property, the coverage and the insurance company.

General information, not advice

The guides are general information. They are not legal advice, and not advice about your own policy: your policy's own wording decides what it covers.

If you find a mistake

Please tell us, and name the guide and the sentence. Email hello@aivinsurance.com, or use our contact page. When a guide is wrong, we correct it, and its date changes with its words.

AIV Insurance LLC (“AIV Insurance”) is an independent insurance agency licensed in Texas. We don't issue policies or pay claims: coverage is provided by the insurance company named on your policy, under that policy's terms. The guides explain how coverage generally works; they do not describe what any particular policy covers or pays.
